A 19-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a toddler and stabbing his mother with a screwdriver in San Antonio’s Northeast Side on Thursday, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

The incident took place near the 3200 block of Nacogdoches Road when a 28-year-old mother found her 3-year-old son outside of the apartment complex with the suspect, identified as Myrajah Deshjonae Rankin, 19.

When the mother approached Rankin, she ordered her to stay away from her son, but Rankin grabbed the child and tried to take him away. The mother held onto her son, but Rankin started to shout and then stabbed her in the forearm with a screwdriver.

The mother lost her grip, and Rankin took the child by force to the side of the apartment complex. A witness who saw what was happening pleaded with Rankin to return the child. Meanwhile, a worker nearby heard the commotion and snatched the toddler from Rankin’s arms.

Rankin then fled on foot and entered a random apartment where police later found her hiding in a closet. She was arrested for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed against the suspect.
